If you’re looking to sell your old phone, laptop, or other gadget but don’t want to go through the hassle of an online auction, eBay’s got you covered with an unbelievably simple selling route called Instant Sale.

While you could probably get more money from the auction section of eBay, sometimes you just don’t want to go through the trouble and stress of putting up a listing, taking pictures, coming back to check up on it all the time, and dealing with buyers. eBay’s relatively new Instant Sale option is a great alternative: just pick a popular gadget (they’ve got quite a few phones, tablets, cameras, and other gadgets in their system), let them know its condition, whether you’ve included a charger, and whether its fully functional, and it will calculate a price for you. You can then check out immediately, ship it for free, and eBay will remove your personal data, deposit money into your PayPal account, and resell it (or recycle it). It’s hard to get any simpler than that. They’ve even got a super easy swap offer for those looking to trade in their old iPhones or Android phones for the new Verizon iPhone.

Of course, eBay Instant Sale isn’t the first service of its type. Sites like previously mentioned Gazelle or the Android-focused Swappa are also quick and easy ways to get rid of your tech, though it’s nice for eBay to add this option, since you probably already have an account there anyways. Hit the link to check it out.

The wonderful blog You Are Not So Smart is back with another great article, this time detailing what happens to you when you’re lost in the frenzy of a large group or crowd. This is possible because we are essentially anonymous in a large group. All it takes is a little arousal—as much as a statement from one member of the group—to get everyone riled up and lost in the moment.

Psychologists call this phenomenon deindividuation, it’s fun to say and one of the more straightforward terms in the scientific lexicon. In certain situations, you can expect to be de-individualized. Unlike conformity, in which you adopt the ideas and behaviors of others for acceptance and inclusion, deindividuation is mostly unconscious and more likely to lead to mischief. As psychologist David G. Myers said, it is “doing together what you would not do alone.”

The article mentions a couple of studies, pointing to a simple way to avoid this problem: remind yourself of your individuality to lose the feeling of anonymity you gain in a group. This can be as simple as saying your name out loud to prime yourself with thoughts of identity. This can help prevent you from taking part in some potentially horrible group actions you’ll later regret.

For a more detailed and fascinating look at deindividuation, be sure to read the full post over at You Are Not So Smart.

Juan Solanoy‘s workspace is a fairly simply white desk in a white room. He scavenged some tree trimmings and propped them up in the corner to add an organic element to his room and serve double duty to hang some peripherals like his headphones. They break up a space that would otherwise be completely sterile (now he just needs something organic and alive and he’ll have to total life on a 23rd century space station vibe down pat).

If you have a workspace of your own to show off, throw the pictures on your Flickr account and add it to the Lifehacker Workspace Show and Tell Pool. Include some details about your setup and why it works for you, and you just might see it featured on the front page of Lifehacker.

But what foods are the best (and worst) for avoiding a mess on your keyboard?

We’ve definitely realized over the years that eating certain foods in front of your computer is a bad idea: potato chips, coffee cake, any thing with lots of sauce on it…but we’re wondering what you guys have experienced.
Instructables user BongoDrummer wanted a way to keep his workshop clean and keep all the dust from his woodworking projects away from his electronics projects. By aggressively reusing everything from scrap wood to plastic canisters to old vacuums he was able to build an amazing little extractor for around $30. Check out the video above to see it in action or visit the link below for the detailed build guide at Instructables.com.

GOTO Lockscreen is very simple to implement with its built in setup/tutorial, so once you download it, you should be up and running in a minute or two. Once installed, you can see immediately how this app is going to save you time. The normal unlock slide function of your Android phone is now replaced with a very stylish arc based slider that has a few other tricks up its sleeve.

GOTO Lockscreen costs $1.50 in the Android Market.

We’ve actually mentioned the Ian Knot once before, but the diagrams were a bit difficult to follow for some, so reader A Jostel put together the above video, complete with a slowed-down demonstration and instructions, for super simple learning (he also included a nice trick to getting the first half of the knot down). It might take a few minutes to get right, but once you get used to it, you’ll be tying your shoes in two seconds flat.

Whether your friends have dragged you to a 3D movie or the movie you want to see is only out in 3D (seriously, that actually happens), having this trick up your sleeve is a nice way to avoid being the crybaby that doesn’t want anything to do with 3D movies. For this to work, you’ll need two sets of 3D glasses from the movie theater. All you need to do is pop out the lenses and rearrange them between the glasses, making two pairs of glasses that will each show the movie in 2D. Check out the video to see the hack in action.

Earlier today I tried installing the popular tethering application PDAnet on my AT&T Android phone; then I found out that AT&T doesn’t allow me to do that. In fact, PDAnet doesn’t even show up when I search the Android Market on my phone, because AT&T doesn’t want me to install it. If I try to install it from the new web-based Android Market, I receive a message telling me that my carrier won’t allow me to install it on my phone.

As it turns out, circumventing this block is extremely easy.

Here’s how:

Turn off your phone.

Pop out the SIM card.

Turn your phone back on and connect to a Wi-Fi network.

Open the Android Market, search for, and install the previously carrier-blocked app.

Turn off your phone.

Pop the SIM card back in.

Turn your phone back on.

Enjoy!

Your mileage may vary depending on your carrier and device. I’m using a Samsung Captivate on AT&T—a phone I’d suggest no one ever buys—and this method worked perfectly on that. If you’ve installed carrier-blocked apps before with your carrier, let’s hear how you went about it in the comments. (Hat tip to a user in the ATTDroids forum.)

Update: As many people have pointed out in the options, you’ve got countless other alternatives for installing apps once you’ve rooted your phone. The nice thing about this method is that you don’t have to root to do it.
